Time Format

This calculator uses HH:MM:SS.MS time format, where: HH stands for hours, MM for minutes, SS for seconds and MS stands for milliseconds.

**Examples:**

- 11:32:30.45 - 11 hours, 32 minutes, 30 seconds, 450 milliseconds
- 72.5:11 - 72 and half hours + 11 minutes = 72 hours and 41 minutes
- :11:7 - 11 minutes and 7 seconds
- :90 - 90 minutes (one hour and 30 minutes)
- ::90 - 90 seconds (one minute and 30 seconds)
- ::28 - 28 seconds

Calculation Examples

- We want to calculate Bolt's average speed
- The distance was, of course, 100 meters
- Bolt ran the distance in 9.58 seconds.

Calculator answers in input box labeled 'speed'. Note, that you can choose desired unit of speed and, for example, if you set units to yards per second, you get the answer: Bolt ran 11.42 yards per second during the race. Setting meters per second, you get 10.44 mps; miles per hour - 23.35 mph; kilometers per hour - 37.58 kmh; etc.

- Check radio button 'Calculate Time'.
- Type 21 into input box labeled 'Distance' and set distance unit to miles
- Type 45 into input box labeled 'Speed' and set speed units to miles per hour

- Check the 'Calculate Distance' radio box and set units to miles
- Type 2:30:00 into 'Time' input box
- Type 55 into 'Speed' box and set units to miles per hour

Time/Distance/Speed Calculation Formulas

Assume, V - stands for average speed (velocity), T - stands for traveling time and D - stands for traveled distance.

Average Speed can be calculated by using the formula: V = D/T

Traveled distance can be calculated as: D = V*T

Traveling time can be calculated using: T = D/V

Using the formulas remember about the units. For example, if the distance is given in meters and the time is given in seconds, calculated average speed is given in meters per second. To convert it to other units of measurement, you can use our speed converter. If the distance is given in yards and speed is given in miles per hour, to get time in hours, you HAVE TO convert yards to miles or miles per hour to yards per hour first.
